A few months ago I wanted to start working on a game. The success of Sleepover has diverted a lot of my creative energy, but I still have lots of ideas and assets laying around, including this one. The idea: a Super Mario game where you play as Bowser. But, you don’t go around shooting fireballs and kidnapping princesses.
Instead, you do the really hard work of being a super-villain: gather resources (clay for bricks, copper for pipes, lava for… fireballs?), build buildings (castles, ghost houses, airships), research technology (mycology for goombas, gunpowder for bullets bill). Think Civilization, or Dungeon Keeper, with a Mario flavor.
Eventually, Mario starts burning his way through your carefully planned world and you have to gate the experience to survive as long as possible. Failure is guaranteed, as a fundamental rule of the Mario universe is that Mario always finds Peach. It’s a game about delaying the inevitable.
Maybe one day!
